Welcome, Brian

December 1st, 2008 · No Comments

The team is coming together; doc director and Portland fixture Brian Lindstrom has signed on to be the producer for THE ADULTS IN THE ROOM. Brian is best known as the director of the feature documentary FINDING NORMAL which has screened pretty much everywhere, won “Best Local Production” at the Longbaugh Film Festival, and was selected by the Oregonian as one of the ten best films of 2007.

But what you might know is that he was the Assistant Director of THE DAYTRIPPERS, one of the indie films that made me want to start making films in the first place (along with HIGH ART, LAST SUMMER IN THE HAMPTONS, and FRISK).

You can read more about Brian at his web site, here.

Welcome, Trevor!

Yes, I know that I just published my last post, but I didn’t want this to get buried in the general announcement of my film.

I want to extend a big welcome to Trevor Fife, the first official member of the production for The Adults In The Room. Trevor is an accomplished director of photography that you may know from the opening title sequence of the Showtime show “True Blood”, or from his work with Stumptown Coffee Roasters if you’re a Portlander.

Of course, I know Trevor from way back when, as the tech manager at the Northwest Film Center, back when I was just a simple intern in the equipment room.

Check out Trevor’s awesome web site here.

Full Throttle

November 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Welcome back. No, wait, you should be saying that to me. I’ve been away for a while. Sorry about that.

And it’s not like there’s not plenty to write about. In case you haven’t heard, I am knee deep in the process of making my first feature film. The Adults In The Room. It’s an experimental doc about a man I had a relationship with when I was a teenager, but more than that, it’s about love, and regret, and becoming a grown up, even if we’re not sure what that means, and may never find out.

If you’d like to find out more about my new movie, check out the sub site, here

More updates soon!

The reviews of THE PULL are in…

April 19th, 2008 · No Comments

…and they’re not great.

It’s difficult to become emotionally invested in either lover, and therefore, trying to understand their forced breakup becomes more effort than it’s worth.”
-Maryam Siddiqi, National Post (Toronto)

“I recall nothing about this [film]. As for notes, I simply wrote down a grade of “C” in my program.”
-Roland Atkinson, www.AtkinsononFilm.com

“Blubaugh certainly digs at some intriguing questions about the durability of love and physical attraction, but the rules of engagement seem so arbitrary that it’s hard to muster an emotional or intellectual response to the material.”
-Stephen Blair, Hot Fruit Blog

Nonetheless, good things keep happening. Mark and I are headed to Toronto on Monday for Hot Docs, and in July THE PULL will be showing at the Edinburgh Film Festival in Scotland and NewFest in New York.

So suck it, Maryam Siddiqi.

I (heart) PNCA

April 4th, 2008 · No Comments

The Pacific Northwest College of Art commissioned me to make a short video to promote the school for their fund raising gala. I decided to focus on the relationship between up and coming photographer J.D. White and his thesis advisor Wei Hsueh. Here’s what I came up with.

Much thanks to J.D. for letting me follow him around with a camera. You can check out his photos on his blog:
